What are the real benefits of CBD documented by science? Here are the 12 most solidly validated effects, ranked by level of evidence.
Evidence level: official marketing authorisation
1. Anti-epileptic (severe childhood epilepsies)
CBD is the only cannabinoid in the world to have obtained a marketing authorisation in Europe (2019) and the United States (2018) under the name Epidyolex. Validated indications: Dravet syndrome, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, tuberous sclerosis complex. Average seizure reduction: 40 to 50%.
2. Multiple sclerosis spasticity (combined with THC)
Sativex (nabiximols, CBD+THC in a 1:1 ratio) is authorised in France for painful MS spasticity resistant to other treatments.
Evidence level: robust clinical studies
3. Anxiolytic
20+ controlled clinical studies since 2011. Documented effects on social anxiety (Bergamaschi 2011), generalised anxiety (Crippa 2018) and panic disorder. Typical dose: 300 mg acutely, 25-75 mg/day long term.
4. Better sleep
Shannon 2019, 72 patients: 67% reported improved sleep after one month at 25 mg/day. The effect is strongest when insomnia is anxiety-related.
5. Anti-inflammatory
Documented inhibition of TNF-α and IL-6 (pro-inflammatory cytokines). Applications: joint pain (Hammell 2015), chronic inflammatory bowel disease (Esposito 2013).
6. Pain relief (particularly neuropathic)
Capano 2020: a 50% reduction in opioid use after 8 weeks. Particularly effective on chronic neuropathic pain.

7. Neuroprotective
Neuronal protection in models of Alzheimer's (Watt 2017), Parkinson's (Patricio 2020) and Huntington's disease. Mechanism: antioxidant action plus reduced brain inflammation.
8. Antioxidant
Antioxidant power greater than vitamins C and E (Hampson 1998). Helps counter cellular oxidative stress.
9. Anti-acne
Oláh 2014 (J Clin Invest): reduced sebum production and inflammation of the sebaceous glands. Topical application.
10. Anti-nausea (chemotherapy)
Parker 2011: anti-emetic effect documented in animals and in the clinic. CBDa (the non-decarboxylated acid form) is even more effective.
Evidence level: emerging
11. Metabolic modulator / pre-diabetes
Recent studies (2020-2024) suggest an effect on insulin sensitivity and blood-sugar regulation. No clinical application yet.
12. Anti-cancer (in vitro and animal models)
In vitro studies on cancer cell lines (glioma, breast, prostate) show a pro-apoptotic effect. Caution: no large human trial has validated any therapeutic effect. CBD is NOT a recognised cancer treatment.
What CBD does NOT do
