A COA (Certificate of Analysis) is the "chemical ID card" of a CBD product — the only document that tells you objectively what your product contains. Here is how to read one in five minutes.
Why a COA is crucial
Three reasons never to buy CBD without a COA:
- Legality: the COA attests that THC is below 0.3% (otherwise the product is illegal in France)
- Efficacy: it certifies the real CBD content (fraud exists — products labelled 20% that contain 5%)
- Safety: it verifies the absence of pesticides, heavy metals and residual solvents
- ✅ The laboratory's name (reputable: Eurofins, ChemNovatic, Phytocontrol, Labosphère)
- ✅ ISO 17025 accreditation (the reliability benchmark)
- ✅ A date under 12 months old (older = no longer valid)
- ✅ A batch number identical to the one on your packaging
- ✅ THC < 0.3% (the single most critical line)
- ✅ A CBD level matching the advertised figure (within ±10%)
- ✅ CBG, CBN and CBC present = genuine full spectrum
- ✅ Acid forms (THCa, CBDa) listed = a thorough analysis

Refusing to share a COA means refusing transparency. A seller who withholds it is not serious.
Anatomy of a standard COA

A typical result table lists Δ9-THC, CBD, CBG, CBN, CBC, CBDV plus the acid forms (THCa, CBDa) as % of dry weight.

Section 3 — Pesticides
All tested molecules (glyphosate, carbendazim, imidacloprid, pyrethrin, malathion…) must read
Section 4 — Heavy metals
Lead, cadmium, arsenic and mercury must all sit below WHO limits. Hemp is an accumulator plant — it draws metals out of the soil. Polluted soil means a polluted product.
Section 5 — Residual solvents
Especially important for oils and resins (extraction products). Residual ethanol under European Pharmacopoeia limits is acceptable. Detectable butane or hexane is disqualifying (poorly purged BHO extraction).
Section 6 — Microbiology & mycotoxins
All pathogens (E. coli, Salmonella) must be absent and mycotoxins (aflatoxins, ochratoxin A) undetected. Critical for dried flowers, which can develop mould if badly stored.
Section 7 — Terpene profile (quality bonus)
Myrcene, β-caryophyllene, limonene, linalool, α-pinene… Not all labs run it (it costs more). A total of 1-3% of dry weight is typical; above 2% indicates excellent preservation.
