Depression affects millions of people every year. CBD is increasingly studied as a natural adjunct — but beware of shortcuts: it is NOT an antidepressant in the medical sense.
What the research shows
Linge 2016 (Neuropharmacology)
In an animal model of depression, CBD produced a rapid (24 h) and sustained antidepressant-like effect, comparable to imipramine. Mechanism: activation of the 5-HT1A receptor.
Sales 2018 (Mol Neurobiol)
CBD promotes neuroplasticity in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus — regions involved in depression. Synaptic restoration was observed.
Pinto 2020 systematic review
Eight studies on CBD's antidepressant effect. A positive effect is documented, but the studies remain small. Evidence level: emerging.
How it works
Three parallel pathways:
- Partial 5-HT1A agonist (the same target as SSRIs)
- FAAH inhibition → higher anandamide levels
- Neuroplasticity: supports the growth of new synaptic connections
- 25-50 mg of CBD per day in two intakes
- Full-spectrum form (entourage effect)
- At least 8 weeks before assessing
- ALWAYS under medical supervision
- CBD may be added to an existing treatment
- Psychiatrist's approval mandatory if you take SSRIs
- Psychotherapy (CBT, EMDR)
- Physical activity (as effective as a mild medication)
- Sleep, nutrition, daylight
- Medication when needed

Usage protocols (as a complement, never a replacement)
Mild depression (medical advice recommended)
Moderate to severe depression
Interactions to know
⚠ CBD + SSRIs: theoretical risk of serotonin syndrome. CBD inhibits the metabolism of paroxetine, fluoxetine and citalopram — dose adjustment needed.
⚠ CBD + MAOIs: combination not recommended.
⚠ CBD + lithium: no direct interaction documented, but monitoring is advised.
Why CBD alone is not enough
Major depression needs comprehensive care:
CBD is an additional arm, never the main one.
When to seek urgent help
→ Suicidal thoughts: contact your local emergency line immediately (in France: 3114, 24/7) → Loss of social or professional functioning → Major physical symptoms
